Assume that you may use any device of your choice in the extemp prep room (but no internet access). If there was an app for extemp prep, which of your devices would you like to use for it?

Post here with your preferences and general thoughts about what the ideal extemp app would look like.

Not that I'm competing, and not that this is a timely post, but I would totally use an iPad app for extemp prep.

Hi,
I'm working an an app for extemp. It downloads articles that are stored on a server, and works like a virtual extemp box.

You can search for articles against their content and title. It uses news websites, think tanks, journals, and magazines from around the world for sources.

Right now it's only for google chrome, but I'm working on adding new features and bringing it to android devices. Next after that is iPad/iPhone.

The extemp app is called ExtempEngine. You can download the google chrome app now.

That sounds like a neat idea. Correct me if I'm wrong, but can you only use ExtempEngine with internet access? For Stoa electronic extemp, one is not allowed to have any internet access whatsoever during preparation time. You can only have articles saved to a dropbox or any other off-line cloud software.

But even if ExtempEngine can only be used with internet access, I might consider using it as a handy researching tool. Thanks for letting us know about it, hayksaakian! And welcome to the forum :)

It works sort of like drop box. The website downloads many articles and saves them on my server. You use the app and download the articles from my website to your computer.

The app installs through Google chrome.

Once the app has downloaded the articles, you can read and search in the app without an internet connection. It only uses the internet to update the article database on your computer.

That is an awesome idea for extemp. ^_^ Congratulations on being brilliant.

The best part is that I can actually use this without wifi once I have key articles downloaded. That is rather useful. I don't know if NCFCA allows electronic prep, but I'm going to point our regional director to your app. It's a fantastic idea and NCFCAers would love it!!

Sorry to renew an old topic, but is the ExtempEngine app still functional? I want to use it for competition next year and for a possible beginner extemp class I may or may not be teaching.

Hi, I built ExtempEngine

Right now there's a bug that's stopping new articles from being added, but right now there are about 30,000 articles from august and back that you should find accessible.

I'll try to put a fix in over the next few weeks.
