Are there any UCLA students or alumni here? What are your general thoughts about their academics and their parli team? Do you find that it's just a huge state university with classes taught by TAs, or that it has decently sized classes taught by professors?

How strong is Bruin Debate? Mainly, I'm wondering how it's coached and what kind of students are team members. And how much time per week do UCLA debaters typically spend on debate? Is it practical to debate at the NPTE/NPDA national championship level and complete research projects with professors, while achieving good UCLA grades at the same time?

I've been admitted to their molecular/cell/developmental biology program and my main alternatives (none of which have sent decisions yet) are UCSD (probably my top choice), Cal Poly Pomona's honors program, and Berkeley. I'm considering UCLA if I don't get into Berkeley or UCSD, or if it somehow turns out to be better than UCSD for biology students. So far, though, its only major appeal to me is its name/reputation. Is there anything about it that particularly stands out?

Unless I am mistaken UCLA had one of the top seed teams for NPTE this year.

Yes, Joe Evans and Nick Matthews are 20th in NPTE points for 2011.

I am not from UCLA, but I am friends with many members of their team. As a whole the squad is incredibly solid; next year Nick Matthews and Cameron Baghai will both be back along with others so there is no reason to assume that will change. I also think they may be getting some TOC debaters, but I could be wrong on that. I am not positive about what their coaching situation will be in the future, but it has been good in the past, and so my guess is that it will stay the same. Going to both NPTE and NPDA was a problem for UCLA (though they did it) because UCLA is on the quarters system and this year finals and nationals fell on the same week. They remedied this by taking finals from a proctor in between the tournaments.

Are you debating this year? I didn't see your name on the Registration for the double up at Concordia. If you are debating, which tournaments.

I'm not at the Concordia tournament because I'm out of town this weekend, but I plan on competing at all other tournaments UCLA is sending us to this year. I don't know which those will be.
